here's a useful harddrive recovery tool:

Linux Disk Editor

it lets you view hard drives' contents even if the partitions and whatnot are messed up. i just found it today though, so i haven't really tested it out. it is on the current Knoppix Live CD.

in windows, i use Winhex. i've actually used winhex to recover mis-resized ntfs partitions, as well as deleted ntfs partition tables.
